Biography

Kim has studied at the Southern Cross University in Australia with Sir Prof. Clive Pascoe (student of Leonard Bernstein) and also under Emmy award winning film composer Hummie Mann. He earned his masters degree in film music composition under the direction of David McHugh (composer for Moscow on the Hudson, Mr North) at the University North Carolina School of the Arts. Kim was also awarded a scholarship at the Aspen Music Festival Film Scoring Program in Colorado, were he received tuition by Jack Smalley (Charlies Angeles, The Last Mohican).

Kim’s score for the student film NEST OF SPIDERS recently won the gold medal for excellence in the category BEST MUSIC IN  A SHORT FILM at the Park City Film Music Festival in Utah.

The Film Foundry in Charlotte, NC comissioned Kim, amongst other projects, to write an original score for the Athletes in Action documentary STRUGGLE AND TRIUMPH (400.000 DVD's distributed worldwide).

Past accomplishments include engineering and mixing the soundtracks in 5.1 surround sound for the feature films American Cousins and One Last Chance composed by Donald Shaw as well as the BAFTA winning score for the TV series Crowdie And Cream. Kim has collaborated with some of the music industry's most respected producers and musicians including John McLaughlin (Five), Dave James (Take That), Gordon Goudie (Simple Minds), Craig Armstrong, Capercaillie, Secret Garden, Phil Cunningham, James Grant, Karen Casey, The Scottish Ensemble and the BBC SSO, as well as the classical and traditional musicians at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

As a producer Kim has worked with former Iron Horse singer Annie Grace. The Album received a five star review in the Sunday Herald: "A contender for 2004's best of list." The organisation Garden In Transit received a song, written by David MvHugh, to accompany their campaign to decorate 13.000 taxis in New York with flowers.

Other career highlights include being front of house engineer reaching audiences of 8000 and also holding the position of Chief Sound Engineer for three Gaelic music TV programmes Sorchur Nan Reul, Togaidh Sinn Fonn on STV and the award winning Tacsi on BBC 2.

Kim has also taught all aspects of recording at the School of Audio Engineering and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the University North Carolina School of the Arts.
